Users often needed to install specific third-party drivers or proprietary software before Narrator, the built-in screen reader in Windows, could output braille text or accept input commands. This setup process frequently required sighted assistance or reliance on text-to-speech audio during the initial configuration.

With the release of native HID braille support in recent Windows 11 Insider preview builds, Microsoft is transforming how assistive hardware interacts with the operating system. By leveraging the HID standard, a long-standing USB and wireless protocol used by mice, keyboards, and gamepads, Windows 11 can instantly recognize compatible braille displays as soon as they are plugged into a PC.

Instant USB Connection and Simplified Bluetooth Pairing

Under the new architecture, connecting a supported HID braille device over USB provides an instant reading experience. Users simply plug the cable into a USB port, and Narrator begins transmitting screen information to the tactile braille pins without asking for manual driver installations.

Wireless connectivity receives a similar ease of use upgrade. Microsoft has confirmed that native HID braille display support works with several popular models built on the open HID standard. Confirmed compatible hardware includes:

  • Orbit Reader 20 and Orbit Slate 340 by Orbit Research
  • Freedom Scientific Focus 40
  • APH Mantis Q40 by the American Printing House for the Blind

Users can fine-tune their braille preferences at any time by heading to Settings, selecting Accessibility, opening the Narrator tab, and choosing Braille. Options include choosing preferred braille translation tables, adjusting cursor blinking behaviors, and switching between unified, contracted, or uncontracted braille output formats.
